The First 10 Minutes: Right After Your Bouquet Arrives

What you do in the first few minutes after your bouquet arrives makes a bigger difference to its lifespan than almost anything else. Before you even reach for a vase, work through these steps in order:

  1. Unwrap it gently. Remove any plastic sleeve, paper wrap, or box packaging — flowers left wrapped tight can bruise or overheat.
  2. Keep the extras. Don’t toss the small flower food packet or care card that came with your order — you’ll want the packet for step 4.
  3. Inspect the blooms. Give each stem a quick look for any bruised petals, broken stems, or wilting that seems off for a fresh delivery.
  4. Fill a clean vase with fresh water and mix in the flower food packet if one was provided.
  5. Trim the stems about 1 inch at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water — this is the single most impactful step for vase life.
  6. Remove any bands or ties bundling the stems together once you’re ready to arrange them; leaving them on too long can restrict water flow.
  7. Pick the right spot to display them — away from direct sunlight, heating/AC vents, and a bowl of ripening fruit nearby.
🌸 Quick win: If you’re short on time, steps 4 and 5 (fresh water + a fresh trim) matter more than anything else — do those first, then circle back to the rest.

Ongoing Care for Cut Flowers

Change the vase water every 2–3 days, re-trimming the stems slightly each time you do. Keep the vase topped up and away from heat sources, and remove any spent or wilting blooms promptly so they don’t affect the rest of the arrangement.

Caring for Potted Plants

Most of our potted plants prefer bright, indirect light and a watering rhythm of roughly once every 1–2 weeks — always check that the top inch of soil is dry before watering again. Orchids do best with a light weekly watering rather than a full soak.
